So this happened today
Today I decided to shave off my beard and start growing it back from scratch and document it for you. Today is day one in how to grow my beard, the start of an incredible journey. If you are thinking of growing a beard but are unsure of what to do or what products to use please join me on this amazing journey and feel free to ask for my help and advice, even share your progress with myself and everyone else.
Why I decided to shave my beard off?
Why not? it is only hair, it will grow back. To be completely honest with you, I find growing my beard the most enjoyable part of having a beard. There are many different stages you will go through and experience, everyone different.
Don’t get me wrong I love having a beard but once I get it to the desired length and style I want, I feel the journey really slows down. This is not a bad thing at all, your beard will always keep growing and will keep your morning and nighttime routines busy.
The good thing with growing a beard you can always chop and change what style you want to go for like you do with your hair. You might really want to try a certain style out and find it’s not for you, don’t worry about this, it’s like a bad hair cut it only lasts a couple of weeks.
Day 1 – what to do?
Well today is going to be the last full shave you will be having for a very long time (depending on how long you keep your beard for) don’t go putting your razor or shaving cream away to soon, it will be needed in a few weeks, and could still be needed on a daily basis depending on what style of beard you are going for.
Now you have finished having your last shave, now what? Nothing, you have done all you need to for just now. Just sit back and let your beard journey begin.
What products are needed?
At this stage all I would recommend is a good moisturiser. Check out my review on The Executive Shaving Co intensive moisturising balm. It is my go to even when I have a beard. I would suggest applying your moisturiser twice a day, first thing in the morning and just before bed. Your skin will thank you for it.
Another must for me is exfoliating. This can be in liquid or in bar form (or do as I do and raid my wife’s stash). If you do go out and get yourself an exfoliator, try to get one with as many natural ingredients as you can. You want to stay away from all those nasty chemicals that will dry out your skin, that’s the last thing you want.
Exfoliate once or twice a week to help to remove the build up of dead skin cells from you stubble. This will help in the battle against the dreaded itch which most men will experience. For more info on how to stop beard itch check out my post on how to stop a beard from itching.
At this point you don’t need to be running out to buy a load of beard products like beard balm or beard oils, I would recommend doing a little research to find some brands or scents you are interested in trying. You will need some form of product as your beard comes in. I will cover more on this over the next few weeks.
Day 2 – what to do today?
Absolutely nothing, well not quite nothing you will be washing your face and applying your moisturiser and more than likely having a good old look in the mirror admiring your growth so far. Not that it is something you have not seen before, as I am sure we have all went a few days without shaving before.
Don’t be disappointed if you don’t see too much happening within the first week, it is only the beginning of your journey and everyones beard grows in differently some quicker than others, Also depending on your hair colour you might see bigger results sooner. I have very dark hair and my stubble appears to comes in very quickly.
The rest of the week.
You will see a little more growth day by day, At these early stages it is crucial to keep on top of washing and moisturising your face as it won’t be used to the new environment caused by your new hair growth. Start getting a routine and it will make growing your beard a lot easier and as your beard grows so with your morning routine.
This is not a bad thing at all I personally find that I star tot take care of myself more when growing my beard. This might sound cheesy but I feel you grow as a person when you grow your beard, it teaches you patience, discipline and gives you confidence.
Feel free to ask any questions or leave a comment and I will try to help you out as much as I can
